The Protector

80 km/h wind gusts in the heart of Yellowstone National Park. -20 degrees.

As I photographed this herd of wild Bison the big males started to band together, forming a semi circle of sorts, faces into the gusting wind. All the females and younger bison were now behind the front lines, effectively being shielded from the blowing wind by the larger bulls. A welcome reprieve thanks to the big bulls.

This photograph was captured at 1/325th of a second. If you could imagine all the streaks of snow blowing across this image, real time would see those streaks being 325 times wider !

No problem for this bull.
Standing strong in the face of the storm, protecting his herd.
