One of the most captivating bears I have ever encountered, this playful sub-adult was an absolute gift to spend time with. Sharing space with her felt less like observing wildlife and more like being momentarily invited into her world.
Photographed along a salmon-spawning river in west-central British Columbia, this stunning young bear repeatedly waded into the icy current, her curiosity impossible to contain. Drawn to the boat I was photographing from, she would pause to inspect it—alert, cautious, yet irresistibly inquisitive.
With effortless grace, she would pluck a salmon from the river and carry it back to shore, tossing it into the air again and again before rolling joyfully in the snow along the riverbank. After a few playful moments, she’d return to the water, circling back once more to study the boat and its quiet observer.
There was a gentleness in her eyes that stayed with me—curious, cautious, and remarkably tender. This image holds something rare: a fleeting exchange of trust and presence. It remains one of the most special moments I’ve ever captured.
