Kootenay King

Photographed in Kootenay National Park, just outside the Banff boundary

After spending several hours moving slowly through the snow, reading tracks left behind by a wolf family, I followed their story across the landscape—never certain if it would lead to anything more than understanding where they had been and perhaps what they may have been up to.

That changed suddenly with the unmistakeable sound of wolf howling, vibrating through my chest. They were much closer than I had anticipated.

Moving cautiously and as quietly as possible I retreated towards my parked car so as not to disturb the wolf family. As I crossed into a lightly treed area near the road I caught sight of the dominant (breeding) male wolf walking away from my position, already disengaging and returning to cover. Busted.

I raised my camera with the hope of a single glance before he disappeared into the thicker forest—and for just a moment, luck was on my side. Through the young trees, he looked back from about 100m offering a fleeting window into the wild before disappearing once again.

This photograph captures that rare, short-lived exchange—an honest glimpse of a wild wolf. Moments like these are rare, and when they happen, they are gone almost as quickly as they appear.
